Rasen and Caistor Cadets in 311 Challenge for Poppy Appeal

Ordinarily, cadets would be helping with the annual Poppy Appeal out selling poppies, but Covid-19 put a stop to that.

Instead, cadets from Four Company, which includes the Market Rasen and Caistor detachments, looked for a safe way to support the charity and came up with the ‘311 Challenge’.

On previous trips to Belgium, the cadets have departed from the Gainsborough Detachment.

One of the most poignant parts of the trips has always been the ceremony at The Menin Gate and the distance between the two locations is 311 miles.

Each detachment was tasked to travel 311 miles using whatever means they chose.

Special mention goes to Lance Corporal Jack Bultitude from Market Rasen, who clocked up 150 miles on his bicycle, and Lance Corporal Elspeth Jolly from Caistor, who rowed 31.1 miles .

Altogether £500 was raised for the Poppy Appeal.

Four Company Commander Major Webber said: “Under these exceptional circumstances the cadets who participated are to be congratulated on such a marvellous achievement.

“Through their ingenuity and commitment these local young people have ensured that the spirit of Remembrance has not been forgotten or beaten by COVID-19”
