The town’s railway station has once again blossomed, so much so it has been shortlisted for another award.

Last year, the group received the lead gold award at the Community Rail Awards, but this year, they are one of six station groups shortlisted for the Platinum Award.

Martin Barnard, secretary of the Station Adoption Group, said: “With the many restrictions and challenges that applied to the usual activities of our volunteers during lockdown, we are especially delighted to be shortlisted for a Platinum Award this year.

“To be on a shortlist featuring adoption groups that have more volunteers and greater resources than ours is especially pleasing.”

This year, with the arrival of Covid-19 and subsequent restrictions, the group has had to find new ways of doing things.

With garden centres closed, volunteers turned to home propagation for the plants needed and work was done on ‘train free’ Sundays to help with social distancing.

The award results will be announced via a virtual awards ceremony in December, while the actual award presentations will be combined with the 2021 awards in September next year.

Martin said: “Many thanks go to all our loyal sponsors and supporters and fingers crossed for the awards ceremony in December.”
