See animals at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park go wild for your old Christmas trees

Christmas may be over, but at a much-loved wildlife park just outside Skegness, festive firs are still bringing plenty of joy — this time to some very special residents.

Set in the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside and just a stone’s throw from the seaside town, Lincolnshire Wildlife Park is home to more than 1,000 colourful parrots alongside some of the most majestic big cats in the UK.

Now, the park has found an imaginative and environmentally friendly use for people’s discarded Christmas trees, turning them into enrichment for the animals in its care.

From large predators to curious, chatty birds, the animals have been enjoying the trees in a variety of ways — chewing, scent marking, climbing and exploring — giving the once-festive decorations a brand-new purpose long after the celebrations have ended.

Animal enrichment plays a vital role in the daily routines of the park’s dedicated keepers, helping to stimulate natural behaviours and keep the animals both mentally and physically active.

C.E.O Steve Nichols is encouraging local residents to donate their unwanted Christmas trees, which can be dropped off at a designated point in the park’s car park.

Those who have donated have been able to follow their tree’s journey on social media, watching as different species investigate, play with or feast on the festive leftovers — something that has delighted supporters and families alike.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Park is not only a visitor attraction, but a registered charity run by The Parrot Zoo Trust, with a mission to provide an inclusive and accessible sanctuary for animals and people. The charity aims to inspire future generations by promoting understanding of animal welfare and the natural world.
