It has been a cautious start as non-essential retailers re-opened in the Sleaford area on Monday after three months of Covid-19 lockdown.

Queues formed early in larger town and cities in the region such as Lincoln and Boston as shoppers got ready to release pent up demand to do something “normal” as the Government lifted restrictions, as long as businesses put social distancing measures and sanitising in place.

Wendy Hanslip of Bellissimo Boutique ladies fashion shop in Sleaford Market Place said her first morning had been really busy, with a small queue forming at times outside, as she limited numbers to only four customers inside at a time.

She said: “It has all been positive. The customers were glad to be out and getting that freedom back. They have missed us and loved our transformation inside.”

She admitted being a bit apprehensive but with all the distancing signs in place, sneeze screen at the till, one-way system and a hand sanitising station at the entrance, everything had gone smoothly. Changing rooms were not open but people could bring items back and she will quarantine them for three days before putting them out on the shop floor again.

She praised North Kesteven District Council for doing all it could to help businesses reopen safely, with signage and promotion.

“This is going to be the future for a while,” she said.

Samantha John of Wisegirls clothing said it had been a quiet first day, but they had all the safety precautions in place. She said: “It is an inconvenience but the safest for everyone.”

NKDC is giving retailers a head start by not reintroducing car park fees until next month after blocking off meters throughout lockdown to reduce spreading the virus.

Leader of the council, Richard Wright, said: “The reopening of non-essential shops is an important step in our recovery from coronavirus.

“After careful consideration with our partners, our car parks will stay free of charge until July 1 to help shoppers as they lend their support to businesses by returning to our high street.”

He said restarting charges will help ensure spaces are readily available and support necessary maintenance.
