Sutton community came together to deliver Christmas treats

The scheme was spearheaded by the Sutton on Sea Community Larder, with particular thanks going to Steff Moon and Helen Matthews.

Just two days before Christmas, dozens of ‘Rudolph Boxes’ and ‘Bags of Christmas Cheer’ were delivered to those who needed them.

The Rudolph Boxes were full of festive treats kindly donated by the local community, and topped up with local vegetables from The Veg Shed, plus a Yorkshire chicken and pigs-in-blankets courtesy of Woldsway Meat near Spilsby.

A big thank you also went to Alford Co-op and their kind donation of 60 boxes of Gadsby’s mince pies, which were added to the Christmas food hampers.

Furthermore, the boxes included a £5 Coastal Community Cash (CCC) voucher which can be spent in several shops in Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe, and Sutton on Sea.

It is hoped this will encourage people to shop locally and support the business who have supported the Sutton on Sea Community Larder.

A spokesperson for the Community Larder said: “We have delivered over 80 Rudolph Christmas hampers along with 25 bags of Christmas cheer, complete with pots of bulbs donated by Mablethorpe in Bloom and some Christmas treats.

“It has been a very tough year, more so for some than others, but our community has shown such kindness and generosity. It is very humbling.

“A huge thank you to everyone who helped in whatever way, and you know who you are.”

The spokesperson added: “The first delivery left the Larder at 10am and we had over 80 to deliver.

“The volunteer drivers took most of the day to complete the task, chatting to the vulnerable and lonely who where overwhelmed with people’s generosity.

“Toys, sweets, and selection boxes where delivered to children and some received vouchers donated from Maisie May’s in Mablethorpe.

“We hope we help you to enjoy the festive period in this time of doom and gloom.”

To date, the Community Larder has given out 1,200 food parcels (since the start of the pandemic), and they also have clothing and other essentials available for those suffering from domestic violence, in addition to a school uniform bank and stocks of sanitary wear for those in period poverty.
