Jeanette McGhee and Stu Graham will cycle 167 miles from Blackpool to Grimsby over three days, August 26-28.

They are aiming to raise £3,000 to buy a set of bikes for White’s Wood Academy, so that every student can take part in crucial cycling proficiency training.

Jeanette, who currently has a child at the school, said: “Many children don’t have access to a bike and safety helmet so it’s a really tangible way that we can help to prepare the children for their future, whilst promoting the school’s values at the same time.

"These bikes will allow hundreds of children the opportunity to ride with confidence and most importantly with safety. We really hope everyone gets behind us.”

She added: "It’s a way that we can give back to a school who have supported my four children enormously over the years, particularly my youngest child, wrapping him in love and patience, allowing him to take full advantage of his last chance at a mainstream setting.

“They wanted to see him succeed and the transformation has been miraculous. They gave us all hope for his future.”

The leadership team at White’s Wood place a particular focus on its students’ health and wellbeing, with a dedicated curriculum strand addressing everything from sleep hygiene to diet, exercise, and the development of emotional awareness.

Cycling proficiency is seen not just as a fitness activity, but a chance for young people to be more self-sufficient and connected with their community.

Headteacher Chris Fitzpatrick thanked the couple and said: “This is such a kind gesture that shows the sense of community that we value so much.

"This opportunity opens doors for the local children that may otherwise remain closed and will make a huge difference to them.”
