Teacher honoured for exceptional service to education and the Gainsborough community
The longserving headteacher of St George’s School in Gainsborough, has been formally recognised by West Lindsey District Council for her outstanding contribution to education and her unwavering commitment to local families.
Katie Barry, who is shortly due to step down from her role after nearly 20 years of service, was presented with a certificate and small gift at a recent Full Council meeting held at Guildhall, Gainsborough.
The meeting saw councillors pay tribute to her leadership, compassion, and lasting impact on the community.
Coun Matt Boles, chairman of the council, led the recognition, saying: “Katie has served as headteacher of St George’s since 2006, leading the school with exceptional dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to its pupils, staff and wider community.

“Under her leadership the school has achieved an excellent Ofsted outcome, reflecting a clear vision and the strong team she has championed throughout her tenure.
“Beyond the school gates, she has made a profound difference to local families - establishing food banks, securing vital grants and ensuring that no child or parent in need went unsupported.
“Her impact on education, and on the wellbeing of our community, has been truly remarkable and her legacy will endure for many years to come.”
Accepting the recognition, Mrs Barry said it had been “a privilege” to serve the school and community.
She said: “St George’s is a very special place, and it has always been about the whole staff team who work incredibly hard.
“I know I’m leaving the school in very good hands, and I hope those sorts of things continue because the community still needs it.
“I’m proud of Gainsborough and the people in it. Thank you for everything you do - this is very much for the whole staff team.”
Further tributes were paid by councillors who have worked closely with Mrs Barry over the years.
Coun Baptiste Velan described her as ‘an absolutely amazing individual’.
He said: “Her dedication to pupils, staff, and parents has been incredible. She is an example that everybody should follow. It has been an honour and a privilege to work alongside her.”
Coun John Flear, a former member of staff at St George’s, praised her profound influence on generations of local families.
Speaking at the meeting he said: “Your impact has extended far beyond the students to their relatives - whether aunties, uncles, grandparents or cousins. Everyone who has come near those school gates knows who to talk to, and you’ve helped all of them.
“People are very pleased for you, but also very disappointed that you are leaving. We wish you every happiness in whatever you do next.”
Coun Lesley Rollings highlighted Mrs Barry’s reputation amongst schools across the area, saying she is known across the town for going above and beyond for her school community.
She said: “Katie and her staff work incredibly hard to make a massive difference to the children they teach. She has done a brilliant job and will be sorely missed.”
Mrs Barry will step down later this year after two decades of exceptional service, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, community support and educational excellence.
