'Truly grateful' - Supermarket customers donate 650kg of goods to food drive in two days
An annual food drive at a supermarket in Boston has, this year, resulted in 650kg of goods being donated to people in need.
The sum – roughly the weight of a classic Mini Cooper – was achieved in just two days, courtesy of generous shoppers at Asda’s Lister Way store.
The supermarket held the food drive last Friday and Saturday (May 15 and 16), working in partnership with Trussell – one of the UK’s leading charities dedicated to tackling poverty and hunger.
Customers were invited to donate food and essential toiletries to support local people during the summer months.

Volunteers from Boston Foodbank were in store on both days to speak with shoppers about their work and to collect donations.
Boston Foodbank forms part of the nationwide Trussell network and is led locally by the Parish of Boston. The food drive aimed to boost its stock at a time when demand for emergency food remains high, but contributions often fall, particularly during school holidays.
Stephen Bromby, community champion at Asda Boston, said: “We are delighted to have partnered with the Boston Foodbank for this food drive, and we are truly grateful for the compassion and generosity shown by our shoppers and colleagues.
“Initiatives like this, alongside our permanent customer collection trolley behind the checkouts – which has been in place since 2018 – play an important role in helping ensure local individuals and families can access essential items when they need them most.”
Trussell is an anti‑poverty charity and a community of 1,671 food banks operating across the UK. Established in 2000, the organisation works to ensure that no one needs a food bank to survive, while also providing three days’ emergency food and practical support to people in need.
