VEDAY75: Visit Lincoln launches new campaign to support virtual celebrations

A new website campaign page has been launched at VisitLincoln.com/VE75 with virtual activities residents can take part in at home.

Friday, May 8, will mark 75 years since VE Day and the United Kingdom will come together to remember the end of the war.

This year it will be a Bank Holiday – a decision which was made to specially honour the 75th anniversary of this most cherished day.

The coronavirus outbreak means that there will be no street parties, parades or concerts this year, but nonetheless there is plenty going on.

While celebrations for VE Day will be different this year, there are still plenty of ways to mark the occasion.

Charlotte Goy, Interim Chief of Visit Lincoln said: ‘VE Day is particularly poignant in Lincolnshire as we have such strong ties with World War Two – here in Bomber County.

“The momentum building up to VE Day this year is terrific, with so many people wanting to get behind the it despite the restrictions; and there some amazing opportunities for businesses to join in.

“It’s presented a great opportunity for our tourism businesses to engage with residents and potential visitors of the future, so we are urging them to participate in any way they can.”

Visit Lincoln has brought together a list of ideas that may inspire more county businesses to get involved.

They include afternoon tea delivery service, re-creating the Lindy Hop at home and videoing it, sharing 1940’s recipes through social media, or even a 1940s Spotify playlist.

Many of the county’s attractions such as the Museum of Lincolnshire Life are also hosting their own virtual events to mark the occasion.

Charlotte Goy added: ‘Sadly, our plans to support street parties across Lincolnshire, and the variety of events planned have been cancelled.

“Instead, we are encouraging everyone to mark the anniversary with their own way at home, and we hope that some of our ideas gives businesses plenty of inspiration.”

Here are some VE Day inspired ideas:

• Can you provide an on-line delivery service bespoke for VE Day? Such as picnic hampers/afternoon teas?

• Host a virtual party with friends and work colleagues.

• Re-create and share traditional 1940’s recipes or present a ‘live wartime cookery class via Facebook live or Instagram?

• Share tips on 1940s fashion and hair

• Do the Hop! The Lindy Hop in your venue and share on-line! English Heritage have even created a special VE Day spotify list which can be found here • Dress your home office, shop, office with bunting and take a photo for social media

• Share an experience online about your favourite aviation experience in Lincolnshire
