Winifred marks her 100th year

A Butterwick woman who has lived in a variety of places '“ from Freiston Shore to London '“ has marked her 100th birthday.

Winifred Tacey celebrated her centenary on Friday at a big party with three generations of her family, followed by a family meal on Saturday.

Born at Freiston Shore, Winifred (née Hoyles) attended Butterwick School. At the outbreak of tye Second WorldWar she was sent to Lincoln, to work on the buses. It was here she met her late husband Douglas, who worked for the prison service.

When the war ended, they moved back to Freiston Shire where Douglas worked at North Sea Camp prison, and the pair lived on site. From there they moved to London after Douglas was transferred to a post in Whitehall.

“This was a bit of a change from Freiston Shore,” said their daughter, Diane Herlinger. “They lived there for a few years, and then moved up to Yorkshire in the later 1950s. In 1978 Dad retired, and they moved to Haltoft End near Freiston. When my dad died in 2011, she moved to The Evergreens in Butterwick.”

In her younger days, before the war, Winifred worked at Keightley’s department store in Boston.

She has two children, five grand-children and four great-grandchildren.
