A member of the Cranwell branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) has brought in more than £1,000 for the charity through an epic alternative fundraiser.

Steven Hanson, 72, of Leadenham Heath, recently rode a vintage motorcycle to 80 current and former Royal Air Force or Royal Flying Corps units in aid of RAFA.

The number was chosen to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain this month, with the final leg being completed on the date itself.

Steven – a veteran – organised the ‘Wrinkly Rides’ in response to how Covid-19 has disrupted traditional fundraising methods. The alternative has, to date, raised £1,030 (plus Gift Aid), and Steven spoke with gratitude to all those who supported it.

Commenting on the experience, he said: “The memorials to those who served, fought and made the ultimate sacrifice so that we, the future generations, could live in a free and democratic society, made me feel very proud and humbled by their bravery. I did not foresee, when I started this challenge, how much it would strengthen my resolve to honour and remember those that gave me my freedom to live my life as I am happy and able to do – we must never forget them.”

The last Wrinkly Ride finished at RAF College Cranwell, where Neil Freeman, chairman of the Sleaford and District Round Table, donated £250 to the fundraiser.
