Young people dive into fun as The Zone opens its doors in Gainsborough

The Zone has been to Gainsborough giving young people a free place to play, create, learn and socialise during the summer holidays.

The pop-up youth space opened its doors on Wednesday, August 19, welcoming dozens of 11 to 18 year-olds who took part in a wide range of activities, games and workshops.

Young people enjoyed everything from axe throwing and PlayStation gaming to mask making, badminton, table tennis and reading throughout the day.

Coun Stephen Bunney, chair of West Lindsey District Council’s Thriving Places Committee, said: “The Zone is an incredible facility that gives young people a wide variety of activities this summer.

“It is free to access and offers young people from Gainsborough and the surrounding areas a safe space where they can connect with others and have the confidence to express themselves.”

Managed by Zest Theatre and funded by West Lindsey District Council, The Zone is designed to give young people a dedicated space to relax and build confidence, while taking part in exciting activities during the five days.

Jack Wilkin, participation coordinator at Zest Theatre, said: “The Zone is all about providing young people a space where they can try something new, find community and connect in a non-pressured way.

“We know there are different folk who need different access needs and support, so we try and make the space as accessible as possible.”

Caley Starbuck, Youth Arts worker at Zest Theatre, said: “One of my favourite things is when people come by themselves and then you can see friendships form and people make little groups.

“Then, for the rest of the day they’re playing Uno together or drawing on the art wall together and going round in their new friendship groups.”

The Zone was brought to Gainsborough Market Place through funding from West Lindsey District Council.

Daisy, aged 11, said: “I have enjoyed everything. My favourite two things were the badge making and the magazine making. I’ve made three badges and I gave one of them to my friend here.”

Ricco and Fynn, who were playing Human: Fall Flat on the PlayStation, said the day was “fun”. They added: “We’ve enjoyed the gaming and the badminton; we’re happy we came today.”

Rhys said: “My favourite part was the PS5. I just played table tennis with my friend; it was a good match.

“I think The Zone is good for the town, to get people out and doing stuff.”
