Sam Neilson appeared at Lincoln Crown Court today (Monday, September 14) where he pleaded guilty to burgling two homes in Market Deeping and another two in Folkingham during a two week spell in July.

Jonathon Dee, prosecuting, said Neilson used a sledgehammer to smash a patio door at a house in Market Deeping while the occupier was out at work. The house was searched and a laptop computer was taken from a bedroom. Later a second house was targeted. A window was smashed but nothing was taken.

Another house in Folkingham was entered while the occupier was inside on July 29, said Mr Dee. The intruders left a few seconds later and police were called. Neilson was seen in the area and two lap tops were found inside his rucksack. Both came from an earlier burglary in the village a kitchen window was smashed.

Neilson, 18 of Sebrights Way, Bretton, Peterborough, admitted four charges of burglary. He was given a six-month sentence in a young offenders’ institution, suspended for 18 months, with a requirement to complete a six month drug rehabilitation programme and a 30 day activity programme. He was also ordered to pay a £900 criminal courts charge.

Judith Brennan, defending, said Neilson had a difficult start to life and had been in care since the age of four. She said that after being placed in a foyer housing scheme he began smoking cannabis and got into debt to a dealer. He then resorted to burglary in a bid to clear his debt.
