The event saw crowds enjoying memorabilia displays at the village hall and music from Metheringham Primary School choir. They were then summoned by ‘Town Crier’ Mark Saunders to the lighting of the beacon where the village’s salutation to the Queen was read and everyone sang the National Anthem.

Nick Byatt, chairman of the Metheringham Parish Council events committee said: “A hearty ‘Happy Birthday’ was also sung which was followed by three cheers and the serving of birthday cake.

“The crowd had representatives of all age groups - but all were united in this very happy and historical moment.”
