Police and RSPCA rescue swans near Boston

Police and RSPCA have rescued two young swans from almost certain death along a busy road.

Local officers were called out to an injured young swan at the side of the A52 near Hubberts Bridge last week.

They called the RSPCA for assistance after the young swan had ‘crash-landed’ into the road.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: “The police were fantastic herding the little swan off the road and keeping it safe on the verge. Our local inspector was thankfully nearby and able to help quite quickly.”

The bird was checked over and luckily no obvious major injuries were found. It was loaded into a kennel ready for transportation to a vet.

The spokesman added: “After leaving the scene, and by pure coincidence, the RSPCA inspector then came across a second juvenile swan sat at the side of the A52 near Swineshead, and a kind member of the public nearby who was monitoring and in the process of calling our national call centre (0300 1234 999).”

Both swans were then transferred to RSPCA East Winch, a dedicated wildlife facility with specialist wildlife vets, near Kings Lynn.

The photo shows the pair waiting in line to be checked, X-rayed and treated.

The RSPCA added: “We are hopeful, with a little TLC they will soon be ready to be released somewhere suitable, and that they will learn to stay away from traffic.”
