People out on work Christmas celebrations or revelling with friends should make it a night to remember for the right reasons, say police.

Anyone who drinks excessively is vulnerable and could become a victim of crime. Alcohol overdose can lead to serious assaults and sexual assaults, people are warned.

High visibility policing patrols will work around drinking hotspots in the Isle and across Humberside in partnership with other agencies and licensed premises in a bid to keep the public safe.

This is to ensure support for people who may be vulnerable and to deal positively with a minority of people who misbehave.

To help everyone stay safe the following advice is given:

• Do not leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers as this could lead to your drink being spiked.

• Stay with your friends on nights out as there is safety in numbers. Try to avoid arguments – people often say things they regret or become more aggressive while drinking.

• Plan your journey home in advance by arranging to book a taxi home or making use of night buses. Never walk home alone.

• Never use an unregistered taxi.

• Do not drink and drive or travel with anyone drinking and driving

• Remember to alternate your drinks with soft drinks as these will help you stay hydrated.

• Wrap up appropriately for a night out.
