Police reassure community after sex attack in Worksop brings “shock” to town

It is understood that the attack took place on a lone female near Newcastle Street, and close to the Queen’s Head Pub, in the early hours of Saturday, December 19.

Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed to the Guardian that three men were arrested shortly afterwards and have since been bailed as an investigation into the crime takes place.

A member of staff at the Queen’s Head pub said he had not known what had taken place at the time, but had returned to work on Sunday morning to find that an area outside the pub had been “cordoned off”.

Worksop residents took to social media on Monday evening to show their support for the victim.

Posting on the Guardian Facebook site, Mandy Sheriff said she felt that women in Worksop would now feel “on edge and in danger” due to the assault.

Natalie Bridget added: “The poor victim will now be scarred for life.”

Worksop Neighbouring Inspector Neil Bellamy warned residents to be vigilant in light of the attack.

He said: “We want to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to make sure that nights out in Worksop are as safe as possible.

“We know that the overwhelming majority of people, especially over the festive season, come into town to enjoy a responsible night out.

“There are preventative measures that you can take to ensure your night is an enjoyable one, such as not going home alone, drinking sensibly and using registered taxi firms.

“There is a lot of information on our website or on the Nottinghamshire Police Facebook and Twitter pages on how to enjoy a sensible night out.”
