Police target speeders in Laughton Common

Police officers were out targeting speeding motorists in Laughton Common on Saturday.

The Rother Valley South Safer Neighbourhood Team were doing speed enforcement work around the new pedestrian crossing at Outgang Lane after reports from residents.

They said drivers were not taking the 30mph speed limit seriously and are often not stopping at all over the crossing.

One resident even complained that she had to move out of the way while crossing with two young children as the car did not stop.

During the operation, 85 vehicles were checked, with 18 breaking the 30mph limit.

Of those, eight were stopped and the drivers given important speeding advice by police. One fixed penalty notice was issued.

Insp Nick Gaskell said: “Police were responding to concerns of the local community.”

“The primary aim was to educate motorists in respect of the dangers of exceeding the speed limit.”

“Where motorists were slightly over the speed limit my staff issued words of advice.”

Insp Gaskell urged drivers to stay safe on Rotherham’s roads and warned motorists of further enforcement if the problem continues.
