Police community inspector Andy Morrice said that during the winter months there had been fewer reports of street drinking – rising from eight calls in December to nine in January and 12 in February.

He also said this had allowed officers to refocus their efforts in other areas.

However, Mr Morrice has said as the weather warms up priorities will return to tackling street drinking issues – particularly in Central Park and down Witham Bank.

“We’re ready for it. We will tackle it,” Mr Morrice told The Standard.

“During the winter period street drinking was down. I was able to move staff away from this and into shop theft.

“However, resources will go back into street drinking.”

Mr Morrice again asked anyone who sees street drinking to report it to the official channels.

Officers have previously stressed the importance of reporting incidents to build up data.

Records of incidents can then be used to prioritise more prominent areas, allowing for the best use of resources.

Mr Morrice added that public reports can also often highlight places that have been missed by patrols.

To report street drinking call the non-emergency number 101.
