Coun Clegg, who is also a Sleaford Town Councillor, won with 457 votes, taking the seat from the Conservatives who had previously held it for many years.

Luke Mitchell (Conservative) had 296 votes and Clare Newton (Liberal Democrats) had 69 votes

The turnout was 20.95 per cent.

Coun Clegg commented on Twitter after the result: “I see it as more of a gain for putting people before big party politics.”

He added: “I also give thanks to all those who voted for me, and indeed everyone who turned out to vote.

“As the newly elected District Councillor for Ashby De La Launde and Cranwell Ward, I promise to work tirelessly and to the best of my ability to put local people’s views, concerns, and aspirations before big party politics.”

Coun Clegg has lived in Sleaford for 15 years, runs his own photography business, and is married, with a 10-year-old daughter.

He said: “We have friends and a house in Cranwell village, and I know many people from villages within the Ward.

Coun Clegg said: “I have seen some very poor decisions being taken in the District, especially on planning issues. I want to make sure residents’ concerns are listened to, so that we can shape a better future for our community.

“We are being consulted about the Local Plan for our area. We need a proper plan that improves where we live; provides enough affordable homes, easier access to shops, services, and amenities; Creates jobs with better facilities, and investment in roads and schools. Let’s create a place where people will want to visit, and contribute to our local economy.

“But with ongoing party political cuts in funding for local services, we need representatives free of party control to listen to our concerns, and to push hard to get the best for us.”
