Household waste centres open extra days to help during suspension of bin collections in North Kesteven

Lincolnshire County Council has extended opening for its Lincoln and Sleaford Household Waste Recycling Centres after it was announced that bin collections in North Kesteven were cancelled for the next week due to an outbreak of coronavirus among the crews.

The county council has added two extra days of operation next week, Wednesday, February 17 and Thursday, February 18, for black bagged waste and general recycling only. You will need to book HERE.

Refuse and recycling services were suspended by the district council on Friday and through the coming week (February 15- 19).

This “unprecedented“ break in service came after a third of the waste collection staff at the Metheringham depot were said to be having to self-isolate following positive tests for the Covid-19 virus or the need to isolate due to close contact.

Lead of NKDC Coun Richard Wright commented: “Our paramount concern is for the welfare of our colleagues, their families and our customers and it is critical that we protect them and prevent any possible transmission of the virus. We hope that by pausing collections we will be in a stronger, more resilient position to resume services with confidence and in safety as soon as we are able.”

There were no household (black bin) or garden waste (brown bin) collections on Friday and there will be no recycling collections (green-lidded bin), paper and card (purple bin) or garden waste (brown bin) throughout the week of February 15 to 19.

No other waste collections, including bulky waste collections and emptying of litter bins will take place either.

It is hoped that following this break in service, all Waste & Street Scene operations will resume on Monday, February 22. A reasonable amount of side waste will be accepted on the first recycling bin collection across the network, plus on household collections for Friday customers whose collection has been missed.

Householders are asked to minimise waste where possible, compacting what they have into the correct bins to maximise capacity and storing any excess in a manner that keeps it dry and intact while waiting for subsequent collections. Where you can, spread any excess over subsequent weeks’ collections.
