Deputy Mayor Stephen Bunney has previously described the potholes on the town’s roads as: ‘an accident waiting to happen’.

But speaking at the town council’s full council meeting, Coun Bunney said he was impressed at the work carried out by new contractor Balfour Beatty.

He told the meeting: “Pot holes have been cleared in town.

“Balfour Beatty has taken over the contract.

“Two kerbs on Union Street have at long last been repaired.”

But Coun Bunney added: “We might have to report some of the ones [potholes] that have been long standing.

“We’ll have to see long term [how the new contractor performs].”

Coun Bunney, who also serves as a West Lindsey District Councillor, previously said the side streets of Market Rasen and surrounding villages were ‘blighted’ by potholes.

From April 1 Balfour Beatty Group Limited and Colas Limited took to the streets as Lincolnshire County Council’s new highways contractors, alongside existing contractor, WSP UK Limited.

Following guidance from the Department for Transport and Public Health England, the county council’s new contractors carried out essential highways maintenance and improvement during the lockdown.

Worth a combined £762m, the new highways contracts will run for an initial period of six years, with the potential to be extended for a further six years.

Back in May the Department for Transport announced a £54.3 million funding boost for road maintenance and sustainable transport in Lincolnshire.

Speaking at the time, LCC executive member for highways and transport, Coun Richard Davies, said: “What this will allow us to do is spend more money on road maintenance – including fixing potholes.”
