In 2017 the Council used the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 to make a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to strengthen its powers to tackle issues being caused by dog fouling in particular.

Powers brought in including allowing council officers to issue a fixed penalty fine for anyone breaching the order.

As well as failing to clean up after a dog and refusing to put a dangerous or nuisance dog on a leash, the £100 fine can also be imposed for owners failing to have on them a suitable container for clearing up dog muck.

The orders also protect children’s play areas, with a £100 fixed penalty for allowing a dog into an enclosed play area.

The orders came into effect for a fixed three-year period, which is why the council has had to renew them after a public consultation period.

The orders are now in place until February 2023.
