Lincolnshire MPs vote in favour of airstrikes against IS targets in Syria

The government motion to join the US-led coalition was passed by 397 to 223 votes after a debate lasting 10 hours.

Lincolnshire MPs voted in favour of air strikes, with the exception of Sir Edward Leigh, who abstained.

Air strikes took place within hours of the decision, involving two pairs of RAF Tornadoes launched from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Their bombs are said to have targeted the Omar oilfields in eastern Syria which are said to be under the control of the militants and supplying them with fuel and funds.

The Ministry of Defence said the first four British jets - supported by a Voyager air refuelling tanker, an unmanned Reaper drone (usually operated from RAF Waddington) and other coalition aircraft - had attacked six targets.

In a statement, the MoD said: “Before our aircrew conducted their attacks, as is normal they used the aircraft’s advanced sensors to confirm that no civilians were in the proximity of the targets, who might be placed at risk. Our initial analysis of the operation indicates that the strikes were successful.”

MoD officials have confirmed eight more jets - two Tornados and six Typhoons - were being sent to Akrotiri to join and support the forces amassing in Cyprus.

The Typhoons have left RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, to join the air strikes. Tornadoes have been sent from RAF Marham in Norfolk. It is unknown at this stage whether any aircraft from RAF Coningsby will be joining the strikes.
