North Kesteven chairman raises the flag for the Commonwealth

A message from the Queen as she set the Commonwealth Games Baton on a year-long relay around the world was read locally by North Kesteven District Council chairman Coun John Money on Commonwealth Day yesterday (Monday).

In addition to hoisting the Commonwealth Flag in a simultaneous ceremony alongside hundreds of others in locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries, the chairman spoke of the strength and relevance of the Commonwealth as a global community of nations.

He relayed the Queen’s message: “The cornerstones on which peace is founded are, quite simply, respect and understanding for one another. Working together we build peace by defending the dignity of every individual and community.

“By upholding justice and the rule of law, and striving for societies that are fair and offer opportunities for all, we overcome division and find reconciliation, so that the benefits of progress and prosperity may be multiplied and shared.

“Through consensus and co-operation great things had been achieved, with continued collaboration in a spirit of goodwill set to bring further reward and fulfillment and build a peaceful and abundant future for all.”
