Public meeting to discuss waste tip closure threat

In response to government cuts, local services are being “reviewed” by Lincolnshire County Council for possible closure, including the Leadenham household waste recycling site.

Although the household waste tip has been closed, the site for residents to drop off bulky rubbish for disposal or recycling was previously saved after a campaign by locals and county councillor Marianne Overton.

Now a public meeting is being held tomorrow night (Thursday) at The Venue in Navenby to formulate a response to the threat. The tip at Whisby is also under review through the council’s cost-cutting exercise.

Coun Marianne Overton said they need to come up with an alternative solution: “We need local voices to be heard loud and clear about what we want to keep. Please come along to add your voice.

“Closing this local site is perverse, a backward step leading to worse costly fly-tipping in our rural lanes. Good citizens would have to drive their rubbish around 30 miles round trip, into central Lincoln or Sleaford, adding an unnecessary burden of traffic congestion, additional pollution and inconvenience to the public.

“The saving is minimal as this is probably the most cost-effective of all our sites. The supposed need to raise standards with futuristic raised bridges is disproportionate and nonsensical.”

She added: “Many of you will remember the furore about this issue last time.

“Local amenity sites are under threat again. Please help us!
