Progress on Isle flood strategy discussed

This is the strategy that will set out how flood and drainage resources on the Isle will be managed over the next 10 to 15 years. The meeting discussed the recent studies undertaken into how the Isle of Axholme’s flood and drainage assets work and how they might be managed into the future.

Mr Percy said: “This is an important group that is designed to bring all those who are involved in flood defence and drainage management on the Isle together. The aim over the next few months to engage with more partners so that we can work together on implementing a strategy for the next 10 to 15 years. Whether it is the EA, the council or the drainage boards, everybody has an interest in working together in an integrated way as each body is responsible for different parts of the system.

“I am very keen that as much of the local drainage system is in local hands as possible so that it is managed as close to the Isle as possible.

“This could mean transferring some of the EA assets to the Drainage Boards but a lot of work is needed before anything is agreed. One huge project presently under consideration is the replacement or refurbishment of the Keadby Pumping Station.

“This scheme is presently being assessed and, if approved, could see tens of millions of pounds invested in upgrading this quite old facility. Residents may remember its current design meant it was badly damaged in the surge of December 2013.”

He added: “The Isle continues to be protected by some of the highest flood defence standards in the country and it is great that everyone is working together on a long term strategy to better manage the flood risk locally.”
