Pupils build ‘hotel’ for creepy crawlies

It’s enough to make your skin crawl.

Youngsters at Laughton Junior and Infants School have created a special insect hotel to attract bugs and insects to the school.

Pupils designed and made the hotel themselves using natural materials, with a little help from adults.

“The idea is to see how insects live,” said headteacher Caroline Keating.

“We can already see spiders in it and are hoping to see earwigs too.”

“It’s all to do with the outdoors and children are loving it.”

The hotel is the latest project at the school aimed at developing outdoor learning.

Pupils have been busy growing fruit and vegetables such as raspberries, leeks, onions, tomatoes and beetroot in a garden at the school.

These are then enjoyed by the children - the school cook uses them for dinners and they are also given to parents for donations.

“We’ve had a big push on outdoor learning,” said Ms Keating.

“We’ve also built a polytunnel in the school grounds.”

“All the children have their own space to grow things.”
