With a target of raising £1,000 for Breast Cancer Now, the Kenleigh Drive resident is hoping that each kilometre ticked off will bring in a further £10 as she follows the scenic Ridgeway trail from Oxfordshire’s Chilterns to the North Wessex Downs.

“I’ve not suffered myself but, like everybody else, I’ve lost friends,” said Rachel, explaining the reason she and friend Tina Hargrave, from Haconby, near Bourne, are taking on the trek.

Covering the distance of two marathons and an additional 10 miles in two days may be daunting for some, but mum-of-two Rachel, who works in the operating theatre at Pilgrim Hospital, is looking forward to the challenge - even if husband Michael and sons Oliver and Ross aren’t so keen.

“My husband thinks I’m crazy, my boys think I’m mad,” she added. “But I’m a sports widow, they’re Boston United fans and cricket plays a big part in their lives.

“Walking is my thing, it’s what I like to do to get out.”

Rachel, who will turn 52 days before she sets off on the challenge on July 16 can currently be seen out training for the event in her pink fleece.

The challenge is part of the Race To The Stones event, billed as an ultra marathon along the oldest path in Britain and culminating in crossing the finishing line in the shadow of Avebury’s 5,000-year-old stone circle.
