The incident happened at about 10.20pm as the two men were discussing the match from hours earlier.

PC Stuart Hutton said: “As the men were chatting they were approached by a third man who slapped one of them in the face, hurled verbal abuse at the pair and punched the second man in the face.

“He then walked along the train into the next carriage and got off the train either at Beeston or Long Eaton.”

PC Hutton added: “This was a totally unprovoked assault that took place with no warning or previous interaction whatsoever.

“Thankfully the two victims, who are both from Derby, did not suffer serious injuries, but we need to find the man responsible.

“Having carried out a number of enquiries we have managed to isolate an image from CCTV and are confident the man pictured has information about the assaults.”
