Rape case delay due to illness

A PENSIONER facing a series of sex charges has had his case delayed once more due to illness.

Frederick Conway currently lives in sheltered accommodation in Gainsborough and is accused of 34 sex offence charges.

The 71-year-old’s charges include indecent assault and rape.

Conway’s offences are alleged to have been committed over a period of five years between 1976 and 1981.

He was due to appear before Lincoln Crown Court in August to enter a plea and for case management, which was then adjourned to Friday 23rd September when the court heard how further reports into his health were required after he was admitted to hospital suffering with breathing difficulties

Mr James, defending, said: “The report from the doctor is much like my own experience of Mr Conway – he is somewhat bewildered by his experience today and he is not fit to plea.”

“His fitness to enter a plea and stand trial and his physical fragility are an issue.”

Hon Judge Heath then adjourned the trial for further medical and psychological reports. No date has been set, but further investigations should take a minimum of another six weeks. Conway was given conditional bail.
