Rasen Racecourse set to blossom with the help of local schools

De Aston, Middle Rasen, Legsby, Osgodby and Tealby Schools have each been given a flower bed to design and plant up as part of the lawn enclosure community project.

It is hoped the project can also be used to strengthen the ties the historic course has with the local community for generations to come.

“It is about providing for the next generation and showing what a fabulous opportunity we have here at the race course,” said Patricia Grove, Sales and Marketing Coordinator who is spearheading the project with Rasen Racecourse committee member Sue Lucas.

“We have had a fantastic response from all the schools and we are really excited to see what they come up with.”

The project is part of the rebranding initiative of the racecourse’s family enclosure into the Lawn Enclosure.

Each school is being given £50 to fund their bed and they are also being asked to create a time capsule to be planted under it.

Once the flower beds are completed, the school can have as much or as little involvement with the continuing maintenance as they wish.

“Other local groups may come on board to help - it is all about linking more with the community,” said Sue Lucas.

“The Lucas family has been associated with the racecourse for many decades and I am pleased to be continuing that link.

“We have a fabulous space here and we want to share it.”

As well as the schools, local businesses have shown they are keen to be involved, with Jacksons Buildbase, Bathroom Desires, Peter Rhodes, Mole Valley, the Co-op and Tesco all pledging support.

In addition, Robbie Parry, owner of Mill Farm Nursery at Middle Rasen, will be on hand with any technical know-how the young gardeners require.

“We can’t believe how well the project has been received,” added Sue,” and if there are any other businesses or groups who want to get involved contact us.”

The flower beds will be showcased at the Don Noble Family Fun Raceday on Sunday July 3, when the Lawn Enclosure will also be officially launched.

The day will have a picnic theme and will also be visited by Peter Rabbit.

Before then, pupils and their parents are being invited to the New to Racing Raceday, when there will be behind the scenes tours, giving the chance to learn more about racing, the welfare of horses and just what happens at the racecourse.

“There are so many jobs that go on here, people are always surprised” said Patricia.
