READER LETTER: Waste Disposal Concerns Over proposal

I am most concerned about the proposed closure of the Leadenham Waste Disposal Centre. I am a resident of 29 years standing of the village of Wellingore and am a regular user of the facility.

I have occasionally used the public waste disposal centres at Lincoln and Sleaford but they incur an approximate 25-mile round trip and one and half hours of travel time, depending on traffic and accessibility at the centre. Leadenham is a 20-minute and four-mile round trip. I am just one user of the Leadenham site and there are a great many more.

By closing the site, there will not only be an increase in road traffic congestion and pollution but also an increase in congestion at the respective waste disposal sites at Lincoln and Sleaford.

What must not be forgotten is the fact that closing the facility will increase the temptation for people to ‘fly-tip’. I understand the financial situation that LCC finds itself in but the saving of £25,000 a year is insignificant compared to the problems caused by closing the Leadenham facility. Please do all you can to ensure that it is kept open.

I do feel, however, that the closure of this and similar sites is yet another strike against the rural population of not only our county but also the country as a whole as the support and services to the population are becoming more and more urban centred.

We are slowly entering a ‘County-v-Town’ situation which is being encouraged by a very urbanised central government.
