Notts County Council’s Finance and Property Committee agreed plans for a new car park on land near to Retford Leisure Centre and Post-16 centre, which is subject to planning consent.

People in Retford have been using the former Ordsall Comprehensive school site as an unauthorised, overspill car park.

Earlier in the year, the council confirmed it’s long term intention to sell the former school site for redevelopment.

This prompted concerns by some people from the community that cars using the land for parking could be displaced into nearby residential areas.

Recognising residents’ concerns, the council entered into negotiations with the site developer,to create a viable solution.

Councillor David Kirkham, Chair of the Finance and Property committee said: “The County Council does not have a duty to provide parking for the Leisure Centre and Post-16 centre and drivers are using the former school site, which we have been planning to redevelop for some time, without consent.”

“However, we shared local residents concerns about the potential traffic problems that redevelopment of the old school will bring about. So, I’m delighted that we have been able to bring forward a solution which provides ample parking, whilst still allowing the new housing development to proceed.”

“By selling the former school site, we’ve been able to raise valuable funds to be reinvested in major projects such as school and road building projects, as well as helping create construction jobs and new homes in Retford.”

“The County Council listens to the views and concerns of local people and we will always do our best to respond in a positive way whenever it is possible.”

Under the plans, the site earmarked for car parking is to the rear of the Post-16 Centre and the proposals will be subject to planning consent from Bassetlaw District Council.
