Chris Waddington opened Waddington of Retford, which specialises in men’s suits and formalwear, on Market Place back in 1997.
But after 17 years in retail Mr Waddington says he is ready to leave the family-run business behind and move on to pastures new.
Said Chris: “I have a massive client base in Retford and the response from the public at my decision to call it a day has been incredibly moving.”
“I’ve had customers coming into the shop to shake my hand and wish me well- it’s great to know that I’ve left a mark on the town.”
“Basically, I’ve had my fill of retail and am ready to take on some new challenges.”
“Leaving Waddington’s means I will have more time to focus on my property business and my family.”
“But I have had a wonderful time in Retford and there are certain aspects of the business that I will really miss.”
Mr Waddington said he was concerned that Retford didn’t have enough shops and the store closure would be another blow to the town.
He added: “I do worry for Retford, I’ll admit. It’s become a little too sleepy in a way and could do with some passion injecting into it, some fresh new businesses.”
“But my work here has come to an end and I will look back on my time at Waddington’s with happiness.”
“My Father owns another Waddington’s in Worksop which has been going since the 1930s and will remain open.”
A closing down sale will run at the store till its closure at the end of June.
