Retford: Team Winston meets the professor at The Elizabethan Academy

Budding scientists at The Elizabethan Academy in Retford quizzed Professor Lord Winston on his greatest achievment - and having Harry Styles round for tea.

The world famous scientist was welcomed by staff and pupils of Team Winston on 1st April.

The Academy’s year groups were organised into teams, with each group picking a leading figurehead in their field.

The team of students in the science area voted for Professor Lord Winston, pioneer in the field of human fertility and famous for his television series’ Child of our Time and Walking with Cavemen.

Student ambassadors from Team Winston, Meike Tomlinson and Shaun Hird greeted him and he told them he was honoured to have one of the Academy’s teams named after him.

Asked what his greatest achievement was, Lord Winston said: “Having my three children.”

The professor also took part in a photo shoot, book signing and joined 200 members of Team Winston for a question and answer session.

He then toured the science facilities, visited lessons and discussed science with years 8 to 13.

Students were amazed and shocked as Lord Winston said that One Direction’s Harry Styles had popped round for a spot of tea.

“In science it is all about collaborating in teams and so all the work I have done has been a team effort,” he added.

“I have been asked to appear on Strictly Come Dancing three times but I have said no, even though they pay well and I could get fit.”
