Susan Fitton, 56, of High Street, Ordsall, pleaded guilty to stealing money while she was working for Superdrug.

“She took money from customers but didn’t put those purchases through the till,” said Marjorie Kirkham-Smith, of the Crown Prosecution Service.

“She would use some money to pay for some personal things and the rest she just kept.”

“She was usually stealing anything between £20 and £50.”

“Although she was not doing this every day, the incidents were becoming more frequent in the run up to the thefts being discovered.”

Defending, Mr David Verity said Miss Fitton had been under a lot of stress in the period the thefts had occurred.

“She had been left with a lot of debt by her ex-partner, who was refusing to take responsibility for any of it, and so left it all for her to deal with,” he said.

“She had also had her working hours reduced, so that meant she was bringing in less money than she had been before.”

“This caused her a lot of stress and affected her health.”

“However, she has admitted to taking the money and accepts it was a very foolish thing to do.”

In addition to the community and supervision orders, Miss Fitton was also ordered to pay £350 compensation to Superdrug and a victim surcharge of £60.
