Return of M&S to Skegness welcomed

Plans for a food hall to be opened alongside a new Aldi supermarket have been submitted to East Lindsey District Council.

It will form part of a new out-of-town retail unit on the former home of Skegness Town Football Cub in Burgh Road. It will include Aldi, Pets at Home and a Marston’s pub and restaurant and is set to create 200 jobs.

Since M&S clothes and food store in Lumley Road closed many residents travelled to shop at Boston’s store.

Developers Quora state in the application: “The proposed foodhall store would enable M&S to return to Skegness trading on an established business model format that M&S is confident will be successful in the catchment area.

“The proposed store is focused on providing their premium food offer in a location convenient for residents of Skegness and beyond, enhancing the retail function of the town.

“It will also provide opportunities for shoppers visiting the proposed retail park to carry out linked trips.”

As well as selling food, the store could also sell flowers, plants, stationery and cards.

Mayor of Skegness Coun Dick Edginton said he is confident many people in the town will be delighted about prospect of M&S returning.

He said: “M&S is such an iconic part of the High Street and had been in Skegness since before the Second World War, so it was a blow to many people when it closed.

“I am sure residents and visitors will welcome the return of the M&S food hall.”
