RNLI Mablethorpe: New recruits help save ‘male in trouble’ on New Year’s Eve

On New Year’s Eve, two new recruits had their first taste of action when HM Coastguard requested the assistance of RNLI Mablethorpe in response to reports of a male cut off by the tide at Theddlethorpe.

The Donna Nook and Mablethorpe coastguard crews advised that there was a male in trouble, and requested for RNLI Mablethorpe to launch both of their inshore lifeboats
to assist a shoreline search.

The male had travelled to the area to take a walk on the beach with his family.

He was helped to safety before the lifeboats arrived on scene. He was very wet and cold, but in good health and happy to be found.

An RNLI Mablethorpe spokesman said: “The gentleman was offered some safety advice and after being reunited with his family he headed home.

“This is a reminder that, although our coastline is attractive and lovely to walk on even on a cold day, we recommend that you dress appropriately for the weather, carry a map or a fully charged phone with maps available to ensure you know where you are if you get into trouble. Thanks to all parties involved.”

This launch was the first official call out for new recruits Luke Edwards and Luke Bond, who have both been congratulated for their involvement in the search.

Deputy Launching Authority Neil Herbert said: “First call outs are always memorable and it was a pleasure today to work with our new recruits who have recently started their crew enrolment. This is a reminder of the consistent need to recruit enthusiastic people who have some spare time and who are looking for a new challenge.

“We are particularly seeking new sea-going crew and shore crew at the current time. Only 10 per cent of our new recruits come with professional maritime experience. The RNLI provides comprehensive training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers and by volunteering, people will gain some fantastic experiences, knowledge and skills with the team.”
