Road safety op is carried out

BAD driving habits cause serious accidents and even deaths on our roads - the message behind a hard-hitting ‘Fatal Four’ police campaign.

Officers were out in force on Worksop’s roads to clamp down on motorists speeding, driving without seatbelts, using mobile phones and drink driving.

Bassetlaw Council’s environmental health team were also on the lookout for drivers carrying illegal waste.

Insp Yvette Saunders, who led Operation Docible, said the day was about enforcement as well as education.

“We are still getting deaths on our roads - we had 37 across the county last year. Drivers fall into bad habits and don’t think about the consequences,” she said.

“The message is clear - you are not putting only yourself at risk but also the lives of others and you will face prosecution.”

Numerous vehicles were stopped throughout the operation which saw officers issue 11 fixed penalty notices to drivers not wearing seatbelts.

They also issued one endorseable fixed penalty notice to a motorist using a mobile phone while driving.

Two men were also arrested for cannabis with intent to supply after a large amount of cannabis was found in their vehicle.

Council environmental health officer Angela Edwards said they issued a £300 fixed penalty notice to a van driver carrying controlled waste within 10 minutes of the operation.

We will also be contacting the householder who paid for the disposal of this waste to remind them of their responsibilities. We would like to remind householders that they are now required to check that anyone they allow to remove their waste is authorised to do so.”
