Stacey Anderson-Gilling, year 11 learning manager at Outwood Academy Valley, was given the rose by thankful mum Angela Templeton.

Angela’s son Matthew starts a scholarship with Barnsley Football Club Academy in July and she believes that without Stacey’s help he would not have got a place.

Matthew, 16, has been playing football with Barnsley Academy since he was young but needed to concentrate at school and achieve his GCSEs or he would not get a scholarship.

Angela said: “He got in with the wrong crowd a little bit and found it hard to handle being in a classroom.”

“Stacey has been his rock and has never given up on him.”

“She sorts his timetable out and speaks with him regularly. She has got him to the point of finishing school.”

“She has been a rock for me too, liaising with me about what is happening.”

“Matthew is in a fantastic place at the moment and the world is his oyster and a massive thanks for that has to go to Stacey.”

Stacey was overwhelmed to be surprised with the Guardian Rose and wished Matthew the best in his career.

She said: “The success stories are few and far between but Matthew is definitely one of them. He is a different boy now to the one I first met.”
