Councillor Jahangir Akhtar, 52, stepped down when a national newspaper printed the slur in a series of articles about the prevalence of child sexual exploitation in the town.

But South Yorkshire Police said that an investigation had found there was ‘no evidence to substantiate the claims’ and announced that no action is to be taken against the councillor.

The council chief, who represents Labour, said he was ‘relieved’ to be reinstated.

His legal team are now looking into the matter.
