Mr Wright has faced repeated calls to step down in the wake of a report which found at least 1,400 children were abused in the town from 1997 to 2013.

The leader of Rotherham Council, Roger Stone, and it’s chief executive Martin Kimber, have already stepped down in the wake of the scandal.

But Mr Wright has until now steadfastly refused to step down, saying he believed he was the best man for the job.

However, under mounting pressure from the Labour party, from whom he resigned last month, and other political and social groups, he has now decided to leave his post.
