Running for pudding

The combination of frigid temperatures and a sparse event calendar results in many runners understandably curling up in front of the TV during December

But not Gainsborough and Morton Striders’ Jerome McCulla, Steven Gaffney or new vice-chair Glenn Peniston who sought out a special event last weekend.

Organised by Steel City Striders each year and taking place on the first Sunday in December along the picturesque Loxley Valley on the north west outskirts of Sheffield, The Percy Pud 10k is reported to be one of South Yorkshire’s most popular events.

Its slightly undulating course with very few turns make it ideal for people aiming to set a personal best.

But, more importantly, each finisher in the race traditionally receives a Christmas pudding for their efforts!

In less than ideal conditions, McCulla ran strongly, finishing 41st of 1,700 competitors (36-56), with Gaffney (81st) and Peniston (725th) both achieving new PBs of 38-46 and 51-05, respectively.

Striders’ training runs take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, including a ladies–only session.
