Savers in Skegness investing in town and staff

The new-look Savers in Lumley Road was launched on Friday, with the Mayor of Skegness, Carl Macey, cutting the ribbon with the help of the Jolly Fisherman.

Retail apprentice Whitney Eldred has been part of the team of 13 working shifts throughout the night to prepare for the relaunch.

She said: “When I moved to Skegness, I really struggled to find work – people said I was just not what they were looking for. So I asked about work experience at Savers because I thought I had nothing to lose. Now I’ve been given an apprenticeship and I’m loving it.

“It’s been really exciting getting the shop ready. Customers are already saying how much they like it.”

Jenny Hunt, 29, moved back to Skegness from Essex to be near her family and was made store manager in October.

She said: “When Whitney first came here, she was really shy but now she has so much confidence.

“We are all very excited about the new-look store. It was very run down before but we’ve had a total refit and it’s looking much brighter.

“We’ve managed to put in a new aisle and get rid of those messy bins at the back.

“There’s much more selection, everything is easier to find and we’ve got air conditioning.

“I hope some of the other shops in Lumley Road follow our example, because shops tend to come and go and that isn’t good.”

Area manager Anne Howard congratulated the team on their achievement.

She said: “I am really proud of their hard work to get it ready. I know there have been shifts throughout the night to get it ready and it looks amazing. This is a big investment for Savers in the store and in the town,”

Mr Macey congratulated the staff on the new store.

He said: “It’s looking really good and I wish them every success.

“The air conditioning is also good news because it’s been quite a problem without it in the summer.”
