Motorist Paul Cox was involved in the two car pile-up at the Sand Lane junction in Saxilby, but police checks revealed his MoT certificate had expired and he had no insurance.

Michael Rajowski, 87, of Main Road, North Clifton, Notts, died as a result of the collision on 22nd July 2013.

Tony Stanford, prosecuting, said that Ben Cox, the nephew of Paul Cox, was following his uncle in another car immediately before the collision and within half an hour of the accident booked his uncle’s vehicle in for an MoT test later the same day.

Ben Cox then called an insurance firm and arranged temporary cover for the Renault Megane involved in the collision.

Police quickly discovered the attempt to cover up the situation and Ben Cox was arrested in early August.

Mr Stanford said: “His response was to tell police that he was not a hardened criminal.”

“He made full admissions and said nobody else had any part in his actions.”

The prosecutor added: “The condition of Paul Cox’s vehicle and his driving in no way contributed to the accident.”

Ben Cox,22, of West Street, Brant Broughton, admitted doing acts intended to pervert the course of justice.

He was given a three month jail sentence suspended for 12 months with 120 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Sean Morris told him “You behaved in a way that was impulsive and ill-considered but in the end in a way that was doomed to be of no use at all and inevitably would be discovered.”
