School's Gold Award for work on anti-bullying and other Neighbourhood News

Bicker Prep School has been awarded a Gold Mark for its work on anti-bullying.

Headteacher Julie Miles said: “We place a high priority on the personal development, behaviour and welfare of our pupils and have been judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in this area. This award recognises the continuous efforts of both children and staff to ensure our school is an excellent place in which to learn.”

BOSTON

* Luncheon club

The Boston and District Women’s Luncheon Club met at the County Club on Tuesday, November 6, for their monthly meeting.

After the usual excellent lunch the speaker was Dr Michael Leach, making a very welcome return to the club. Dr Leach is an author and photographer working with Sir David Attenborough.

He had recently returned from watching humming birds in the Caribbean.

The title of Michael’s talk and beautiful photographs was ‘A Natural History of Christmas’. He has written a book with this title and studies behaviour in animals.

He started his talk going back right to King Herod, telling members how everything about Christmas came into being. Right from the birth of Jesus, which they believe was really 7 BC, as Herod died then.

Christmas has evolved through out the centuries.

The Romans decided on December 25 as a feast day and referred to it as Christmas.

He also told us about the berries and plants like holly and ivy, sage and onion, some were medicinal to cover up the decaying meat as in mince pies. The 12 days of Christmas all represent something, so the song is quite meaningful.

The ladies said he was ‘a brilliant speaker’ and ‘everyone was enthralled with his interesting tales’.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 4, when the speaker will be Jill Collinge with her talk entitled ‘The Christmas Tradition’.

FRAMPTON

* U3A digital slideshow

The U3A are putting on a ‘digital slide show spectacular’ of events from Frampton West at St Michael’s Hall in Frampton West on Sunday, from 7pm.

* Home Movie Group

The Gosberton Baptist Home Movie Group Christmas Party is on Wednesday, November 21, at 2pm.

There will be entertainment and a Christmas buffet.

* Good Companions

A coach party of members and friends of the Gosberton Good Companion’s Club enjoyed their final outing for 2018 on Tuesday.

Organised by Chris Edwards, the party travelled to Dobbie’s Garden Centre at Kings Lynn for morning coffee before going on to Foldgate Inn, Stradsett, near Downham Market, proving to be a very pleasant venue for a lovely lunch.

This took the form of a carvery, followed by a choice of sweets, coffee or tea.

Afterwards the party travelled to Swaffham.

Chris thanked everyone for coming on the trip and also Terry, the coach driver, thanking visitors who help to fill the coaches. The driver, Terry, also thanked the club for travelling with A & P Travel.

* 1940s Night

Gosberton Public Hall is hosting a 1940s night with Amanda and Steve in the hall on Friday, November 16.

* Royal British Legion

The Gosberton branch of the Royal British Legion is organising a centenary concert for Saturday, November 17.

It promises to be a very good evening with the Banovallum Brass Band celebrating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War in Gosberton St Peter and St Paul’s Church at 7.30pm.

Tickets at £7 include refreshments and are available from Debbie Reynolds on 01775 841585. All proceeds will go towards the RBL Poppy Appeal.

There will be a raffle and prizes will be welcomed.

* Remembrance Day

A record number of well over 200 people attended the Armistice service at the Gosberton war memorial on Sunday morning. This was preceded by an interdominal service at the Methodist Church when the congregation was welcomed by Barry Richardson. The service was conducted by the Methodist minister, the Rev Francis Ballantyne, with Bible readings given by the Rev Steve Weatherly-Barton and Archbishop Douglas Lewis. Prayers were led by the Rev Ian Walters. Barry read a poem on peace and Jean Mews was at the organ. Afterwards the service at the memorial was jointly conducted by the four clergy. The Gosberton Guides and Brownies were in attendance. Guide standard bearer was Natalie Greenhalgn and the Brownies’ Katharyn Greenhalgn. Major Ron Meredith laid the wreath on behalf of the Royal British Legion; Coun John Clark, on behalf of the parish council, and Ellie Crick for the Girl Guides. Following the service all were invited to the public hall for soup and crusty bread put on by the Gosberton branch with a grant from the Community Cuppa events and cakes, which were supplied by members of the Methodist church. In the afternoon there was a service at the Gosberton Risegate war memorial led by the Rev Ian Walters and the Rev Steve Weatherly-Barton. Wreaths were laid by Major Ron Meredith on behalf of the Royal British Legion and Coun Tim Smith for the parish council.

GOSBERTON CLOUGH AND RISEGATE

* Children in Need

The Gosberton Clough and Risegate primary school will be helping raise money for Children in Need on November 16, at 9am through to 3pm. Year six is holding a bake sale at the end of school.

Any donations of cakes and biscuits will be most welcome with proceeds for Children in Need. Students at the Clough and Risegate school had their photo taken on November 1. On November 2 there was seven-a-side football game, and later on that day all enjoyed a Hallowe’en fancy dress fun night. There was a short film, snacks, music and dancing. Monday, November 5, saw a class trip for Oak and Maple children to the National Space Centre at Leicester. This was a fun day with a planetarium experience included.

* Woodbine Bible Study

The Woodbine Bible Study meets at the home of Mary Burton on a Monday at 2pm.
