Schools welcome Games torch

Excited pupils at all three primary school waited patiently with flags and banners to cheer on the runners carrying the torch.

The torch set off from Worksop in February and is travelling around Bassetlaw before returning to the town hall in June. Volunteers are running with the torch in the School Torch Relay, visiting every school in the district on a 90 mile route.

Last Wednesday the relay runners travelled from Beckingham to St Peter’s C of E Primary School at Gringley-On-The-Hill.

“The children were looking forward to its arrival and were really excited,” said head teacher Mr Andrew Pullin.

“The sense of occasion of having a bunch of runners carrying the torch and high-fiving everyone really brought the spirit of the Olympics home to them.”

Mr Pullin said pupils were doing a variety of sporty activities throughout the year, culminating with a sports day on the same day as World Sports Day 2012.

On Thursday morning St Peter’s pupils waved goodbye to the Bassetlaw Torch as the runners made their way to Mattersey.

They were greeted by smiles, cheers, waving flags, and even kids dressed as Pride the Lion - the official London 2012 mascot.

The torch spent the rest of the day at Mattersey Primary School before moving on to Everton Primary School on Friday.

Children and staff were thrilled to welcome the torchbearers with flags, banners and badges they had made specially for the event.
