Sewage site work planned

CURIOUS residents are invited to a meeting to discuss a £15million plan to improve sewage treatment works in Worksop.

Severn Trent’s scheme at their Retford Road plant is planned to start in the summer of 2012 and take about 18 months to complete.

The company say that as well as making their operations more environmentally friendly, the work will also result in their large vehicles no longer having to pass through the nearby residential area.

“Currently all the sludge from Worksop and the other small sewage treatment works in the area is taken to the sludge digestion plant at Stoke Bardolph, Nottingham,” said project manager Dale Collison.

“This means that the sludge is being used to generate energy, but it also comes with the large carbon footprint from transporting the waste. Creating a central treatment centre here at Worksop will reduce the number of tanker movements and the associated carbon footprint.”

Severn Trent say that the majority of the work will take place within the Retford Road site and shouldn’t be cause traffic disruption, but additional land is needed to accommodate some of the new structure and it is likely that the towpath along the nearby canal will be closed or restricted in use from October 2012 to February 2013 .

An exhibition to discuss the plans will be held at Rayton Spur Community Centre on 8th December from 4pm-8pm.
