‘She brings out the best in kids’

Mrs Angela Waplington has been teaching at Charles Baines for over 20 years.

Having seen generations of kids through their primary education and through working as a special needs specialist, Mrs Waplington has touched the lives of countless children.

We went along to the school to take her by surprise and present her with her well-deserved rose.

“This is wonderful - I’m shocked and absolutely amazed,” she said. “It’s so nice to be appreciated.”

“I just love working with children - they give you so much back and make it such a pleasure to come in every day.”

“My relationship with the kids is built on mutual respect. We’re here to learn but I care about them and hopefully they enjoy coming to school.”

Mrs Waplington continued: “The staff here are fantastic and everybody cares so much. It really is like one big happy family.”

Having taught at the school for over two decades, Mrs Waplington is now seeing some familiar faces.

“Now, I’m starting to teach the children of children I’ve taught before,” she said. “That’s a real reflection of Charles Baines - it’s a family school.”

She added: “I’d just like to say thank you for this rose. You don’t come to work for awards but it’s lovely to be recognised and it’s things like this that make the job worthwhile.”

Headteacher Mr Nigel Walter said that Mrs Waplington was more than deserving of our Teacher’s Rose.

“She’s well-liked by pupils, parents and staff,” she said.

“She has high expectations for all of the kids in her classes and more impressively, she has a great rapport with them.”

He continued: “It may sound twee, but she really makes sure that they can do the best that they can in whatever she’s teaching.”

“She’s got the overview of all of the children on the special needs register and she gets exceptional results out of them.”

Mr Walter added: “I’d like to say a huge congratulations to her from all of the pupils and staff here, and keep up the good work.”

“She’s part of a very hard-working team and I’m very lucky to have such talented staff.”

Mrs Waplington was nomined for the Teacher’s Rose by Caroline Newman, whose nine-year-old son George Dengel was taught by her last year.

“I think she’s a really nice and pleasant teacher and has been so good with helping George,” she said.

“Since he started in her special needs class, he’s come such a long way and she really deserves recognition for that.”

She added: “Mrs Waplington really connects with the kids and George and I just wanted to say thank you.”
